In this one, the narrator wakes up Sunday morning with his mind 'all in a haze,' tear stains on his pillow, makeup on his face. Hazlewood also sets the scene on Sunday morning. As he sings in the chorus, 'And there's nothin' short of dyin', half as lonesome as the sound / On the sleepin' city sidewalks of Sunday mornin' comin' down.' In the establishing shot of the first verse, Kristofferson tells us: 'Well I woke up Sunday mornin' with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt / And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more, for dessert / Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt / And I shaved my face and combed my hair and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.' Later in the song, he sees a father playing with his daughter in the park, which kind of leaves you wondering if he had a family, too, before he drank his life away.

Johnny Cash does an amazing version of this heartbreaking portrait of the morning after. Kris Kristofferson, 'Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down' In the opening verse, the great Ray Davis sets the scene with: 'Here's a story about a sinner / Who used to be a winner / Who enjoyed a life of prominence and position / But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements / And his selfish wife's fanatical ambition / It turned him to the booze / And he got mixed up with a floozy / And she led him to a life of indecision / The floozy made him spend his dough / She left him lying on Skid Row / A drunken lag in some Salvation Army mission.' When he hits the chorus, though, the narrator is singing from his own perspective: 'Oh demon alcohol / Memories I can't recall / Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol.' And the fact that the beat sounds like somebody staggering back to the bar for one more round just makes it that much more inspired.
